Geek Chic! Holy Rant Batman!!

Geek
A geek is an individual who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd. The Merriam-Webster definitons are "1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake 2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked 3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity."
From Geek in Wikipedia

Lately i have been hearing the name geek thrown around for anything, and it's really starting to make me mad!!
It's not that geek is insulting, in fact lately everybody's a geek, even Paris Hilton!!!!
And that is just plain wrong!!!

So these days:
if you read comics: you're a geek
if you see a sci-fi series: you're a geek
if you like fantasy or sci-fi: you're geek
if you play a computer game: you're a geek

Oh come on!!!!

Who hasn't read comics as a kid and these days you're NOT supposed to stop reading comics when you grow up, look at all the comic book movie adaptations that are flooding the cinemas. It's not obscure, not by a longshot, who in this world doesn't know who Superman is?
We all grew up watching Star Trek, Space 1999, V, you name it. And we still watch new sci-fi series, i can think of one that is quite popular right now, Lost.
Sci-Fi and Fantasy are no longer that far away from the mainstream, look at movies, look at TV Shows, look at books. I'm thinking Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Eragon. If you're a kid, are you a geek?
And Computer Games, come on, with tons of games and devices being sold every year can we still point people out by playing a Game?!?! Is it THAT geeky?

If the name geek will continue to be used this way, who is not a geek then?
Now more than ever i can say the following:
When i grow up i'd like to stop being a geek!!

PS: If you understand the joke behind the title, don't worry, you're not necessarily a geek, you can just consider yourself knowledgeable in Pop Culture. Or maybe it just means you watched TV as a kid.
